hi, got an old mac in the nursery when you turn it on all that is on the desktop is a folder icon in the middle that flashes between the apple icon with the 2 faces and a question mark any ideas what it is and how to fix it, i dont know much about macs so try to explain it in simple terms :lol:

Isn't this the Apple equivalent of no boot drive for a PC? I think it means that the drive has a problem, and can't boot Mac OS, which would mean a rebuild (or a repair if possible?)..

ive gave it up as a bad job lol, its an old os9 machine and theres a cd stuck in the drive so i cant even reload software and im not messing about taking it apart, will just have to go with the rest of the macs

It is likely that it is stuck trying to read a non-bootable CD.

 

If you reset the PRAM (Command + Option + P + R) this can help ...

 

Depending on the actual machine you can boot it into the options screen where you can see what volumes are available to boot from (hold down the Option key on boot). If it does not show the hard drive then your will have to remove the stuck CD and insert a bootable disk ... run the repair utils ... or just shrug and forget about it (as I think you will do anyway).
