techie211 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 hey ppl, I just took on a new job at a small district. We have two Win2k3 DC's that hold separate rolls. One holds the Domain operations master, Infrastructure master, RID master and PDC Emulator. The other only holds the Schema Master. I want to transfer the Schema master role to the DC that holds most of the FSMO roles. I read somewhere that only one DC should hold all the roles. Is this a wise decision? What problems, if any, could result in this transfer? what are the advantages other than the obvious? thanks for the replies.
ChrisH Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 You do not need to have all the roles on one server. It is good to spread them out a little if you have a fairly large network although in most cases it won't make a difference. If you had more than one domain then certain roles shouldn't be on the same server but according to what you have said, you are a single domain or you are the root domain. Also consider global catalogs when thinking about FSMO roles etc.
techie211 Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 thanks for your reply. we are a single domain small network. when you mentioned gc's are you referring to replication?
ChrisH Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 No I am just referring to your global catalog placement as I always think about it/them at the same time as FSMO roles.
