Hi,

 

Like most of you we have lots of photos on a shared drive in school.

 

Does any know of any decent image organization software that could be installed on a client and access a pre-designated drive.

 

Possibly one that does tagging and possibly face recognition.

 

Does picassa do something like this ?

The last time I looked at Picasa it worked by writing metadata for each picture alongside the images in their folders, but had no provision that I could see for shared access, so if two people were using Picasa to access a shared folder they would both assume they had control of the metadata files and chaos would ensue. The client-side version of Picasa could well have changed now, or the multi-user use-case could have simply shifted to the cloud-based version of Picasa, at which point your images need to be transferred offsite.

I have been looking in to this to and not got far, Picasa uses local databases for storing edits and renamed etc, so the user as to click 'Save' on every image to save the changes to the disk / original image. It also tends to lose drive maps for some reason (Or so I found). Now looking in to using Eye-Fi to get pictures on to the server where I want them, but still rely on simple folders structure.

We've been using picasa for some time now - all students and staff have linked google apps domain accounts (some 1.7TB just for photostorage)

I don't see the issue with sharing - staff can share with individual students, by class or by yeargroup (by way of sharing a link).

Some staff use the picasa client, but most are directed to picasaweb. Clearly it doesn't use a shared drive (which is better IMO from anywhere access PoV), perhaps you should look to Gallery2 for this - adding a CIFS share?.
