Win 7 Pro - Desktop Hostname

Hi Guys,

 

We are wanting to implement something where by the IP address and Hostname are displayed on the desktop wallpaper, I have looked on the internet but we don't want to do it running 3rd party software and locked down users (who we want this for) wont have man y rights on the system, I have read that we can change the "My Computer" name to say the Hostname but it's not really what we are after we want it displayed on the desktop in plaintext so when they phone the help desk we can just say "if you minimize your screen you'll see on the desktop the Hostname...." or something along those lines - It's something that I'd want to roll out via Group Policy.

 

Any body any ideas - is there a registry modification or something ???

You cant do it without 3rd party software, either something which runs all the time or something which dynamically generates a wallpaper with the writing on.

 

In windows 7 the host name is clearly displayed on the My Computer screen but as for the IP address, its more difficult to find out.

 

What about a shortcut to a script in their start menu which would display the information. So you could say "If you go into your start menu under Maintenance and click Show System Info you will see the hostname and ip address" etc etc.

Any reasons you won't accept 3rd party? Is it in terms of security, or as in you just don't want bloated stuff?

The problem is with our machines we arn't allowed to install anything other than what needs to be installed I.E Office etc, it's to do with certain business standards we need to adhere to but I think I seem to have found out how to do it ... will keep you posted.

What about something like BGInfo? (BgInfo)

 

I know you say you don't want to use 3rd Party stuff, but this is something that Microsoft Recommend for the job and it does it rather well, so ...

In that case, what about a simple alternative.

 

Make a script that will create a blank folder "somewhere". Then create a toolbar on the taskbar that links to it. Thus showing computer name.
