Hi,

Is anyone using Hamachi from LogMeIn? I am looking at using this so:

1. When i am in Australia i can VPN home to the UK and browse the internet with using my UK IP address from my web browser.

2. So if i am in public areas i can VPN in to keep myself private.

I will probably use Gateway mode.

The idea of using Hamachi is that its easy to configure for none technical users and has a good mac client.

Does anyone have any feedback please?

Thanks

there would be no need to VPN as it would essentially be a LAN, so you could in theory use remote desktop :)

as for part 2, not too sure, depends on if public networks allow access to hamachi through their firewalls

How do you mean? I wouldn't want to use remote desktop as it would be rubbish for view videos on the web. Basically i would like it so my so when i use the internet in Australia on my laptop that it shows as a UK ip address to websites.

Thanks

Think you're misunderstanding how hamachi actually works. All hamachi does is a simple setup VPN. Aka you're connected to your "home network" as such.

You still need to connect to the internet "some way". Either it's remoting onto a home computer, aka RDP/VNC, or you're using your "aussie" connection. Just by connecting to the VPN won't change your IP or anything. It's just like being connected to a home LAN, You can see/interact with the connected computers :p Example, You can view shared network folders on the computers.

If all you're after is a change of IP, it's not really what you're after. (From how I got your post anyway)

Dam! I know some VPN products will allow you to use the gateway on the remote network when you connect rather than the local one the laptop is connected to.

Does anyone know of any products that can do that.

The only other way is if i setup a simple proxy server on the machine in the UK, connect using Hamchi and point Firefox to the machine with the proxy.

Pretty sure hamachi doesn't let you do that, never seen it on mine at least (but then never looked much, so may be totally wrong).

End of day depends what the overall reason for doing this is, If as you seem to mention it's to allow access to "UK only" sites, aka BBC iplayer etc, Is there any reason you can't use any old proxy online, If it's only for things like that and you're not logging in/security blahblah.

If it's for anything that's not streaming video/games etc, Is there any reason not to use RDP/VNC? As you wouldn't need millisec pings etc.

Would rather not use a random proxy as if i want to use it for anything personal etc whilst using public WIFI. The idea is to also use the VPN for added protection when using open WIFI connections etc.

Will think of something im sure :)

Hi Everyone,

Just found this thread and I'm currently evaluating Hamachi, I have been asked to provide a VPN access for 1 user I'm guessing this could expand to 5 for LMT members.

I tried Gateway configuration but couldn't ping any of the servers.

Current Configuration is: Hub & Spoke everything pretty much works and I'm not seeing slow performance unlike other post's on Google.

My only problem is that connecting via Hamachi to MS SQL 2008 (SIMS) I get faced with "SIMS Connection failed for login gibsonm, reason:0".... Any ideas ?

Would be interesting if this is a Hamachi issue or general issue with users connecting to MS SQL via VPN.

Regards

Matt
