[windows software] Check my CALs!

Just to make sure I am compliant!

 

I have:

 

* 74 Server 2008 (bought after R2 was released so I assume the LEA licensing guy missed off the R2 as it's always the latest version) device CALS to cover all PCs

 

* 4x physical Windows Servers running 2003 R2 Standard on three of them and 2008 R1 Standard on the other. All are covered by Server 2008 R2 server licenses (apart from our MIS server covered by 2003 R2 LEA provided)

* 2x virtual servers on Vmware (for the time being) 1x Server 2003 R2 Std and 1x Server 2008 R2 Std covered by Server 2008 R2 server licenses

* 1x Forefront TMG 2010 1x CPU license running ISA Server 2006 (which is virtual but only has one virtual processor)

 

I assume I'm all hunky dorey here, and when I move to HyperV I'll have one spare server license.

 

I run Sharepoint 2010 Foundation, which I believe does not require any licensing. It's open for the parents (anon read only) and for staff (login) - as it's free I assume I don't need any CALs, and the user CAL covers staff logging in for WebDAV etc..

 

Now it's only students which I need external connectors for - as they aren't covered by the User CALs. And from what I've read 1 x user CAL covers all Windows servers on site.

Hmmm I'm starting to doubt my own sanity here.

 

We only have 65 staff and I swear the CALs were per user not device. SO why 74 and not 200 to cover the students. All this was arranged by the LEA before I started, so they must have advised the licensing correctly (! DANGER ! DANGER ! SARCASM ALERT! )

 

The paperwork is in my office. The electonic version from the LEA just says "Server 2008 CAL". Very handy!

You can license per user cal or per computer, with user licence every user student and staff needs a cal or just 1 cal per comouter.

Hmmm it's got to be per device and I read it incorrectly.

 

IS that concurrent devices as in you can have 80 PCs but only 50 are on at once (guarenteed) and you can get away with 50 licenses, or are they tied to one machine?

 

Not that it really matters we'd need to buy another 15 machines for me to hit the limit I love LAN Sweeper

And that's why I was confused apparantley we were sold CALs. Just plain old CALs and we can choose whether to use them as user or device.

 

Erm, I was sure it didn't work like that. That they cost different amounts.

Apparantly the LEA guy doesn't specify as he likes to give the school the flexibility. The reseller then automatically pick Device CALs if it's not specified.

 

That's all fine, the only folks who access WebDav remotely are teaching staff on their staff laptops which are covered.

 

I also got five free user CALs with the server, so I assume this covers myself accessing remotely from any of my home PCs - which would usefully cover me, the Office Manager and my Senior Senior Leaders.

Just another quick one.

 

If we give parents READ ONLY access to ePortal for viewing reports and attendance would we need external user CALs for the following:

 

1) To login via ISA with an AD username and password. This would mean I can tweak the parents area and put more "school specific" documents in there, which would be fine for the parents to read, but not for public view

2) To access the MIS database on the admin server which is running Server 2003 and SQL 2005? Or as it's read only view mode, does this avoid the need for CALs for parents?

If it's not anonymous access they need cals.
