Rebuilding server with 2008R2 (previous 2008 32 bit)

I'm planning on rebuilding our 2008 DC with 2008R2 over the summer. The hardware is fine as we already have other servers of the same spec running 2008 64bit and 2008R2. I'd be grateful if fellow Edugeekers could take a look at what it's running and see if there maybe any issues/gotcha's. My initial checks so far show that all software is okay on 64bit:

 

Server is DC running DHCP, DNS, WINS, RID/PDC/infrastructure roles

(secondary DC is on 2008R2 on Hyper-V on different physical box)

 

Software

Devizes room booking

Backup Exec 2010

Spiceworks

SQL 2008

Secureassess

Powerchute Network Shutdown

Broadcom suite

Windows imaging server

Superspell 2 database server

Obviously you will need a complete Reinstall. Backup Exec 2010 is fine, I use it on 2008 R2, Spiceworks Fine Also, SQL 2008 Fine, Secureasses (dont use), Powerchute Network Shutdown (dont use, i use the Edugeek Shutdownatron ), Broadcom Suite (Don't Use), WIS (don't use), Superspell 2 DB (i assume is MS SQL express or flatfile, either way, it SHOULD work fine).

 

Almost forgot...don't forget to push AD DC Functionality all over to your DC02

wait! wait! wait! I completely was not concentrating there at all!

 

If it IS MS SQL Express, you might need to check that out with the software supplier. I recently had an issue with Lync Server (2010) where it can't be installed to a domain controller (or at least you cant put the database on the DC), this was an utter pain in my ass and ment i had to virtualise the DB Server on windows7. Sorry.... that what my bad!

 

The FULL 2008 MS SQL is fine, our School MIS uses it, it runs on 2008 R2. I know there are potensial issues with express in some cases depending on application!

 

I would install a 2008 R2 VM and test it out if i were you!
