Mine was sims2005 on a sims2005 instance! Then i moved to 2008, and it had to keep the name cos of how i migrated.

Only at Easter did i manage to start afresh how i wanted:

\sims2008 as the instance

dbname = sims.

Now i can move that to any instance for ever and it will be named right.

Ditto FMS it was called ccsfmssql - who thinks these up?!

Just a query really, do any schools name their SIMS database to anything other then "SIMS"?

Not come across it, but many fms database have different names, especially if the school has a childrens centre attached.

Reasons to name Database instance other than SIMS are:

More than one Instance, now or in future.

Easier to identify the instance if sent to Capita.

If you are only having or likely to have one instance then SIMS is absolutely fine.

As someone who supports many Databases and instances, easy identification is useful.

However, it seems many default installations are poorly thought out in terms of what to call the db. The instance, can be anything, so long as you can identify it on your network. But the db is often called the same as the instance usually something like SIMS2005 That then gets migrated and isnt 2005 anymore, which is confusing.

Sometimes you have something like simssvr\sims2005\sims2005 which is what we had in the past - crazy.

then it goes to simssvr\sims2008\sims2005 . It's even more confusing when you come across someone that has their server called SIMS or sims2000 - it happens!

@creese do you have any setups where you host multiples yourself? Do you have an instance per school and they all dbs are called sims, or one instance and the db name is unique..

@jinnantonnixx has a hosted setup with loads of sims but, i think they have one instance.

We have several sites with multiple instances. Also some training machines and test machines with up to 6 instances. All on the same database.

The Database itself is the least important name-wise, in my mind.

We'll be hosting two SIMS DBs using this structure:

\SIMS2008BS\SIMS

\SIMS2008IS\SIMS

Top one being for the British Stream, bottom the Indian Stream.

Simples!

You mean DB name right...?

Rushed to post as I had to attend a dead or dying server.

The central is MSSQL.SIMSSQL2008\MSSQL\school(1-12).mdf
