Hi all,

I'm going to be rolling out Windows 7 on some news PCs. To save time, I'm planning to build the installation of the OS apps on one PC and get the supplier to image the machines. I've got a few questions that I'd appreciate some help with:

1 - if I use a Windows 7 trial to install the OS with, can I then convert the key to a KMS key? We are going with the new MS Agreement, but I want to get started before things arrive. If so how do I do this?

2 - is there an easy way to set up a 'default' profile? With XP machines, I use a specifc account to build the local profile, then log on as another domain user and copy the profile across to the 'Default User' profile folder

3 - Are there any specifc things I need to do to a Windows 7 PC before imaging it?

Thanks,

Neil

1. What i would do is install Windows 7 as normal but dont activate. It will give you 30 days and when you get KMS sorted you can then activate no problems.

2. It is possible but i little more tricky. I use mandatory profile so not needed to do this.

3. Sysprep, thats all i cant think of.

Excellent thanks for that. Does the Windows 7 trail give you 30 days not to activate? And would you advise activating before imagining or after each PC has been imaged. I'd prefer to do it beforehand, as it means each imaged PC is then pre-activated.

It wont be a trial its the full version but after 30 days it goes into reduced functionality until you activate.

No because when you sysprep it resets the activation and un-activates windows. You could do but it would be pointless

So the easiest thing to do would be to just grab an ISO of Enterprise and just leave it unactivated until I have my KMS Server in place?

You can activate the product with a MAK key then later convert to KMS. One of the options within the KMS server is to remove then reinstall keys ;-)
