ICT Network Manager Day Rate

I've struggled to decide which forum to post the quandary...

 

I have been offered some ad hoc support for a primary school, sorting out the IT messes they have, with a question looming as to what fee I would want for my time.

 

Does anybody have any experience of what a fair day rate would be for a NM contractor in primary schools? I want to be fair to both sides, and probably prefer to error on the side of charging too little, with the hope that it might turn into a regular thing?

NM in Primary school here commands around £23k-£25k... (less than 30 miles outside of London)...Working out on a daily basis £60-£80 if you were in full time employment. Double this if it is a short term contract....Meet in the middle if it is guaranteed to go long haul, and get the low end if you are guaranteed the job for 2 years or more

If you're doing this on your own (i.e dont have the backup of a large company behind you etc) then I'd say in the region of £130 to £180 per day is reasonable. Don't forget that to work in most schools as a contractor you will need public liability insurance.

 

You may find it easier (although you will be paid considerably less, you wont have to worry about tax, national insurance or liability insurance etc) if you ask them to actually employ you as a network manager, but on a 'zero hours' contract - you would then just submit what is effectively an overtime claim each time you do work there.
