Why does my chmod look like this?

how do I use it?

it is a default RHEL 6.1 install

I fixed it now. but what is going on here?

Run 'history [n] | grep chmod' (man history) and scan thru the list as long as you can be arsed to see if it was issued at CLI...

it's not been used. New installation.

Perhaps the permissions were corrupted during install?

*shrug* can't find anything in the release notes or technical notes that'd explain it... seems odd tho that permissions would get corrupted at install. If that was the case, system wouldn't be able to use chmod to set attributes on other files, therefore I'd expect quite a lot to have odd properties. How do the other system binaries look?

Knock up another fresh install in virtualbox on a PC and compare? Only thing I can think to do... see if the vbox install comes out the same... if not, something very wierd is going on!

I'm not too familiar with Red Hat. Does Red Hat have a "check CD for defects" option like Ubuntu does? That would be my first guess, along with comparing the downloaded ISO's MD5's just to have some extra assurance. Very strange, though...
