Exchange 2010 \ Domain Controllers

Just been reading around various blogs \ technet articles about the Exchange 2010 migration and some seem to suggest you need to have a 2003 DC in order for setup to complete correctly? It might alternatively be saying you need to have a minimum of 2003 SP1 (which makes sense) but the wording isn't clear enough to tell either way.

 

Also been reading if you're on 2008 R2 exclusively for DCs it can affect schema updates? Each site seems to be saying subtly different things so would be interested to hear from anyone who's done a migration from 2007 to 2010 how much of this is true...

 

- did you have a 2003 DC in place during the migration?

- have you kept a 2003 DC since?

- are you running 2008 R2 DCs and OS for the Exchange box?

1. You need a min of Win 2003 Sp1 for your scheme. Yes we had Sp2 on the DC and some DC's as Win 2003 R2.

2. Yes, we still have 2003 DC's in place

3. Our 2008 DC's are R2 and have Exchange running with R2

 

I assume you are going to use DAG? If so you will need Ent Edition.

Looks like it'll benefit me to keep one of our current physical 2003 DCs running for a while yet. Don't think we'll be using DAGs initially as apparently you can't have vMotion and DAGs on at the same time. Seeing as the Exchange server is going to be a VM I reckon protecting against VM host failure would be more useful than protecting against database loss (as all the data would be on the SAN anyway)
