I was thinking a while back of doing something similar to what Joomla Shack has done and creating a pre configured Joomla setup for a school to use, but beaten me to it now.

Use Admin Tools by Akeeba, it is a fantastic tool and even the free version is great for security. If you are really concerned you can also use RSFirewall by RSJoomla, which cost money but with the two your site will be well protected. Of course no security tool can defend against a crappy server, so make sure you did not fudge there and have a good server solution to base your security on.

Joomla CMS is easy to use or maintain. it's good for school website development.
