[wds] WDS and windows XP

We are trying to possibly move away from Ghost for our XP images. We currently use WDS for our Windows 7 images.

 

We are trying to do the following:

 

1. capture our windows xp using the XP sysprep utility using the answer file we created for it.

 

2. use WDS to capture the image and then use it to deploy it.

 

do we need to create another boot image for capturing an XP image?

Hi,

 

I recently learnt how to do this so it's still fresh in memory. I'll answer briefly here but if you need any more help let me know and I'll jot down something more detailed.

 

You need to create a "Capture" boot image. To do this just right hand click on your normal boot image under the "boot images" node on the WDS MMC Snap In and click "Make Capture Image". Follow the steps and you should end up with a new "Boot Image". Make sure you enable it and then when you boot into WDS you'll have the option of which boot image to use and if you use the capture one it will load the on the computer and take you through the stages to enable you to capture a new image.

 

You won't be able to capture an image unless the source computer has been sysprepped though.

 

This answers your question but assumes you already have everything else set up properly. If you're like I was then might need a bit of help setting up a few other things. If you want any more in depth help then let me know.

What does this do with an XP image out of interest? Does it make it almost universal like the Windows 7 one or will it only restore on simular hardware to what it was captured on?

We're completely Windows 7, but a few of the primaries that we support are on XP and this would be a much better solution to ghost. Paricularly if we can get rid of the 5/6 different images for different hardware and just use one.
