rednight Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Hello, We are looking at encrypting the teacher laptops using Truecrypt and I wondered how any Truecrypt tecchies out there are managing the user passwords? We will probably go for full disk encryption - but as the laptops are sometimes shared between different teachers (for class cover purposes) I am a little stuck as to whether it would be OK for every laptop to use the same password or whether this is not acceptable in the security world! Seeing as we are using encryption to protect the laptops in the event of them being lost/stolen rather than protecting individual teachers from each other(!), I don't see a problem in using one password for all. What do you think?
FN-GM Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Personally i would give each laptop its own password. What OS are these running? If its Windows Vista or 7 Bit locker might be a better option. As this will use the individual passwords.

FN-GM Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Ah well i would use TrueCrypt and each laptop to have its own password. If you have small number of 'pool' laptops you could get away using the same password for those.

I have done my best to make them aware they are not to share these with outsiders or pupils.... Like you, as the aim is to protect any data on them if the event of loss or theft, I'm happy for them to share the encryption passwords amongst themselves
