Anyone know of any good, simple guides on moving the Dalvik Cache to SD on a rooted Desire?

Don't really know of a guide on how to do it, unless you're in to hacking at the Android source there's no manual way of doing it I don't think. Fortunately though, people who are in to hacking away at the Android source have released this script (flashable to your phone, but make sure you read all the pre-requisites first!):

I've tried this but it never reboots properly. I've left it on the HTC boot screen for 15 mins plus.

Have you tried performing a wipe after flashing it?

 

From the recovery menu, look in advanced for "wipe user data and cache" - you may lose some of your settings (as you would installing a new ROM), but that could be what's causing the problem

I've wiped data and cache so many times. If I weren't so determined to do it I'd give up. :-)

 

I've got a very poor signal at my desk so will have another go later.

Which ROM are you using? It's my understanding that HTC Sense ROM's are particularly rigid, if you want to start applying patches/scripts like this you might want to consider another ROM (if you haven't already of course)

I've tried Cyanogen 6.1.1 now I'm on Android 2.3. It's all very new to me having finally decided to root the phone, so learning as I go.

 

Just trying to understand the whole process really. When I do it will all suddenly become crystal clear.

Android 2.3 may be your problem, I know that a substantial chunk of the framework was changed for Gingerbread so scripts had to be re-written, I'm sure I saw a dalvik2sd hack for Gingerbread over on the Oxygen forums, I'll try and dig it out for you...

What annoys me most is that there are 2 caches which seem identical, such a waste of space.

Same here. That will be a job for later at home.

Well... I'm not entirely sure how but it worked. I now have 134Mb/147Mb free after reinstalling all Apps.

 

Time to leave the phone in a working state and concentrate on the bathroom rebuild.

Good to hear! I took the plunge this weekend and S-Off'ed and flashed the Oxygen HBOOT - 162 apps installed and 200mb free!

$&*%! just as I sorted it, the phone keeps crashing overnight. Looks like I will have to go back to Cyanogen or my alarm won't work.
