How do you provide secure remote transfer to the remote office without continuous VPN

Hi All,

 

I wonder what could be the possibilities for sharing files securely on Windows server environment if you are not allowed to use any free services (Drop box, rapidshare.com, etccc) and must be securely published to the Windows Client users ?

 

FYI: at the moment I'm using Juniper SSL VPN to access terminal server environment.

Do you mean internally or externally. If you mean externally just use windows file shareing over the VPN links. If you mean internally you can look at using ipsec between clients and servers to tighten up security above and beyond ip subnet and VLAN segmentation.

Externally to the users in remote office or their home PC, I was just thinking to publish it through WebDAV but i heard that it is going to be obsolete soon ?

WebDav is obsolete now, and has limited support under Vista or 7 and is insecure. What are the usage requirements, do the users need to just download the files or do they need to upload also.

 

If you are providing this access to external computers has any thought been given to making sure that these computers at least have a chance of being secure with an up to date AV, OS etc? This is where something like NAP on Windows Server VPNs can be handy.

 

You could look at using http://www.edugeek.net/forums/web-development/59485-home-access-plus.html over SSL to offer much better support than WebDav but any thoughts of security go right out the window when it is open to users 'unwashed' home computers possibly full of rootkits and viruses.

Why does the remote site not have a persistant VPN link, small user base? A document by document solution is limited when dealing with a whole site unless this fits well with their usage pattern.

what about sharepoint or some thing like alfresco or atrium? Yuo can share the files directly over the web then via http/ https and all the end user needs is a web browser. Job done.

Thanks for The reply and suggestion mate, the user will need to upload and download files bothway.

 

This is so that they have access to particular directory inside the fileservers.

the user will be able to download and upload files with sharepoint as well. What you'll need to ask yourself is do you really need a traditional shares and folder structure or would you be better served with each department having it's own sharepoint sub site. For example at my college staff don't have any mapped drives - everything goes through sharepoint.
