Home NAS and Host files

Sorry if this sounds dumb.

 

OK I have a old NAS on my home network. Do I need to change the hosts file on each computer using it or have a DNS server for it to run OK. Rather than the clients go asking my ISP's DNS server for its IP? How can any samba device work when there no hosts file entry or DNS A record?

as long as you have a router you should have internal dns anyway you shouldnt need to do anything unless you have set pcs to go to an internet dns server rather than the one on the router
