MIME_ATTACHMENT_STRIPPED

Not sure where to put this, so here goes :-)

 

We're running Exchange 2007 on Server 2008 and we seem to be having a problem with certain email coming through.

 

The only bit of the email we see is as the title of this thread suggests "MIME_ATTACHMENT_STRIPPED". Now the only emails that this seems to apply to is any email we receive from Sam Learning with usage reports attached.

 

Apparently all usage reports come through as PDF files, and we have had SAM Learning send us through test reports which come through fine, yet the automatically generated ones all seem to get stripped out of the email. I've spoken to the council as well, and they can see the email coming through and the attachments but as far as they're are concerned the email is being passed onto us as expected, therefore the problem must lie with us.....

 

Hopefully someone has come across this before and will be able to help :-)

1. Please confirm if you have FPE 2010 or similar running on Exchange?

2. I assume Sam Learning in a 3rd party org and have their own Exchange?

3. How are the automatically generated emails composed and sent?

4. Do you have any AV running on Exchange?

5. Can you check if you can see that email attachemnt in OWA?

Iain.... difficult to explain but we've hit this sort of thing and made a workaround so it might work for you too.

 

Create a Transport Rule that does this:

 

Apply Rule to messages

Sent to users that are 'Inside the organization'

and when the 'Content-Type' contains 'related'

Set 'Content-Type' with 'multipart/mixed'

 

and see if that works for you.

 

You might want to adjust it a bit more to narrow it down to your test, or possibly keep it disabled until just before you get one of the generated emails come through (assuming they are a scheduled thing).

 

Of course, use at your own risk etc in case it destroys all your emails or some such weirdness

 

Point 5 of sukh's post would be good to know the answer of, as thats how we were noticing it, and in Outlook itself, you'd have the paperclip icon next to the email but you wouldnt see anywhere where the attachment was, whereas if you logged into OWA, you could see it and access it fine.

 

Happened on both Outlook 2007 and 2010 as i remember...

Thanks for coming back to me.

 

1. We do not have FPE 2010 running on our exchange server.

2. Sam Learning is essentially a revision based website (almost like a vle type thing) where you can assign homeworks to groups of students, who can then logon complete etc. Each month a report is being sent into us showing details of the set tasks, this si the file which appears to be being stripped. They must have their own email server, although I cannot say what they use. I do know that the attachment is present when it hits the council's redirect and they aren't stripping it out, so it has to be something on our exchange box.

3. I've no idea on this.

4. We do have AV running on exchange - Sophos

5. I've checked OWA, and there doesn't seem to be an attachment on there either. In Outlook itself there is no paperclip icon either to suggest that there should be an attachment.

2. Can you upload the message header of the message?

Ignore my message... its not the same thing

 

Any antispam or transport rules that might be causing it?

 

Perhaps a stupid thought, but could it be a upstream provider thats stripping it for some reason? Can they confirm that they arent stripping it as it leaves them?
