is havgin logmein on a server safe?

 

iv been told that its not good practise and schools will not like us having remote access to there servers, does anyone use it? and what do you think regarding school privacy issues and policys?

Just install it on your workstation, and mstsc into your servers from there. Works fine for me.

 

EDIT: Hang on, re-reading your post, sounds like you're external support staff, rather than internal... in which case, you'd have to talk to schools and say, if a basic workstation is set up somewhere for us to have remote access, we can support you better. If you don't like the idea then we can't support you as well.

 

If you have access to the servers on site then it shouldn't be an issue having access remotely though, should it? Clearly they trust you with the data already...

School has remote webdav setup for the staff done by us and we manage the server so i dont see any problems, but just wondering if anyone has had this said No to by a school. Also why is logmein blocked by the lancashire learning grid!! that sucks

Logmein will be blocked as you do not want Students circumventing filtering by logging in to their home PC.

If it's a CLEO school then you can probably get Sun Global Desktop access if you need it - get the school to contact them on your behalf and request it

I don't allow our support companies to install logmein on the servers, however we have an account and then can assign multiple users who are allowed access. This means we are always in control and can remove access from somebody if needed. Depending on what they are supporting for us we then give them an AD username that is restricted to the servers they need.

I created a VM and installed Logmein on there for remote support companies - the VM only gets switched on when the company has requested it for a specific purpose.
