glennda Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 One of our student helpers has come back from a University and has seen software which displays a list of unoccupied computers in the library and other areas etc. I've had a quick look and found this software from a sponsor - has anybody used it- is it anygood? I'm going to download the trial and play but wondering if anybody has any expierence of this software? Or any software which is similar?
eejit Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 What a good idea - hadn't thought of that before. Your link does seem a little pricey, so I'd be interested to hear about experiences too and/or alternatives too.
glennda Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 Does anybody here work at a university in portsmouth? As apparently this is uni they looked at! I'm going to send them an email to find out.
reggiep Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I'd be interested in something like this where the LRB manager could then book the computers at lunch so only the student selected can then use it.
plexer Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 webman has an open source system that tracks logins presumably this would be able to show what computers were currently free? Ben
somabc Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) We are implementing a system to do exactly that at Imperial just now. http://i.imgur.com/ZYFRJ.png Edited February 17, 2011 by somabc

srochford Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 is it custom made or a company's software? It's home brew. The login script writes to a syslog server as a user logs on and I think that data is analysed to see which machines have a user on them. I know it also does more than that but I haven't seen the actual code. I think we will eventually go live with a mobile app so people can check for free machines - we have a very lightweight web page at the moment which can show every cluster and the number of free machines.

glennda Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 ahh thats cool - is it something that could be shared? I've started to look into making one. I'll update all when i have had more time to play.
glennda Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 Craig A Rodway Ben I think is going to be a good start - I can then adapt the output forms to how i would like it formatted. I will check with Webman that hes happy for me to share the final page but as long as he is I will do.
plexer Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 He's released it as open source so you can do what you wish with it under the realms of the licence. But I'm sure he won't mind anyway Ben
