Hyperlinks created in OWA won't open

I think this is a common problem, but I haven't been able to find a solution to it.

 

If we include a web address in an email created in OWA (exchange 2003) such as:

 

BBC - Homepage

 

When the recipient (using a different mail client) clicks on the link, it opens in their browser as:

 

https://intranet.ourschool.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://intranet.ourschool.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.bbc.co.uk

 

Does anyone know why this happens and how to resolve it?

1. Which version of Exchange 2003 are you using?

2. What SP is it on?

3. Have you installed post rollups/patches?

4. When you are create a message with Outlook and the link (like http://www.bc.co.uk) and open via OWA do you still get the issue?

5. If you have OWA published externally, have you tried from a PC which is NOT connected to your network? i.e from home?

6. If the problem only occurs when you click external web link in email, please check the NTFS security settings on file \Exchsrvr\Exchweb\Bin\redir.asp. Normally Authenticated Users group should have NTFS permissions below:

We are using Exchange 2003 with the latest service packs and patches applied. I'm not sure if it will resolve this particular issue, but we are intending to upgrade to a more recent version of exchange later this year.

It's normal for emails read in OWA to exhibit this, but not those sent to other recipients. My guess would be that the original URL was copied from an existing email in OWA and then pasted into a new email, rather than being created directly?
