Windows 7 Power Settings

Hi, I have a CC4 network running Windows 7 clients. They all appear to be running on the high performance mode for power settings. Whilst this is fine for desktops, the laptops are barely lasting a morning.

 

I raised the call with RM and got back:

The power plan is configured via the control panel options from within the stations and is not configurable from the registry policy in RMMC. You would need to either create a Group Policy or import a custom reg key to change the power plan in all the stations.

 

Please refer the links "When you configure power options for the active power plan in Windows Vista or in Windows 7, the changes are not reflected in the Power Options item in Control Panel" and "Power Button - Start Menu - Windows 7 Forums" for more details.

 

As this has not been tested or validated in CC4, I would recommend you to create a custom registry policy and apply the changes for few computers.

The first link is useful, the second one does not relate to my problem.

 

From the first link, I can see what registry settings I need to look at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{025A5937-A6BE-4686-A844-36FE4BEC8B6D}

 

And then 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e for balanced.

 

But I have no idea how to create this in a custom policy.

TBH just use group policy for w7 to do this.

You can set the options for on-mains and on-battery and they will override as necessary and it doesnt risk breaking other things.

Its in computer policy, just trying to find it.

I would do but the RM server is a 2003 and I don't think you can do that sort of thing via gp? I know you can on our 2008 r2 admin server.

For a fact a 2003 dc can distro w7 gpo specifics. All you need to do is create the policy on a w7/2008 r2 client. Vista/2008 can as well of you update their stores.

I just got this reply back from RM which seemed usefull too:

 

1. At the workstation open notepad. Copy and paste the following text into the window:

 

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{025A5937-A6BE-4686-A844-36FE4BEC8B6D}]

"PreferredPlan"="381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e"

 

2. Save the file as powerplan.reg

 

3. Run the file "powerplan.reg" by double clicking on it

 

4. Reboot the computer and log on to test the registry fragment has applied.
