"EMBC - Providing your secure connection"

Just been passed this leaflet from EMBC and one of the points in there says:

 

"Internet visible servers in schools/organisations are vulnerable to intrusion from hackers and from webspace hijackers. Hosting school serers in the secure embc data centre overcomes these security issues."

 

Am I reading this wrong or does that mean that EMBC offer colocation of servers?

I think what it means is that they offer hosting aka host your own web server but we can host your website. However I do know of commercial arrangements between BSF contracts and RBCS where servers are hosted in data centre so very possible...

EMBC will host / provide services for you including email and websites, and they will do LA services too. Partners they work with (eg NODE4) can do Co-Lo but that is probably at a prescriptive cost to a school but I can ask for prices.

 

One of the problems with school hosted servers is that they can sometimes be set up wrongly with horrible holes, or just simple things that folk haven't turned off. There is presently a scan run across internet visible servers and if vulnerabilities are found then a report is sent to the LA and the school is also informed. These are starting to be done now and folk in Northants have been reminded at meetings as far back as 2 years ago about hardening servers.

 

Saying that, there are plenty of internet visible servers hosted in Northants schools that are perfectly fine.

Or someone at the LA asks embc for an external IP to one of your IPs that they assume is the cisco voip, but is actually a windows 2000 server, and doesn't tell you
