HallX Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) Hi Folks Came in to work this morning, one of our servers off. Restarted server, server boots stays up for 2-3 minutes & then gracefully shuts down. Last night I rebooted the server before I left for home after it installed update KB2419635. I have taken the server off UPS as I initially thought this was the issue, same problem. Problem doesn't exist in safe mode with networking and nothing in the event logs. I'm stumped at the moment, any ideas? Paul * Forgot to mention, I removed the KB2419635 update and rebooted, same problem. Edited January 14, 2011 by HallX
cpjitservices Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 could be a RAM or HD problem can you boot and tell it not to restart on errors using the F8 button ? you'll be able to see whether it gives a blue screen.
HallX Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 @cpjitservices Thanks for the reply. I would have thought if it was HD or RAM, I would have errors in event log. The server isn't bluescreening, I get the logon box OK & I can logon. After 2-3 minutes the "This computer is shutting down" box appears & goes into graceful shutdown. This doesn't happen when in safe mode with networking. Paul
kmount Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 And there's nothing in the event logs? Could be rebooting due to an update requesting it and nothing stopping it.
simpsonj Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Worth checking the scheduled tasks to see if anything has popped up there? Or Tak manager to see if any errant applcations or processes are running? The fact it shuts down gracefully seems to be a software issue rather than hardware, as hardware is rarely graceful when it fails! Sorry I can't be of more help...
HallX Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Hi Folks It's official, I'm a pratt!!! I had already tried all your comments then, after expresso number three, the light shone. Although I had disconnected the server from UPS & plugged straight into mains, I hadn't disabled the Powerchute Network Shutdown service. Server boots, sevice can't detect UPS, sends graceful shutdown command. Shame it can't be ar*ed to note it in the event log though. Thanks all Paul
