they are more stable, granted but PC's are pretty stable if running pro-tools when using digidesign hardware designed for the software!

 

trouble we have with the PC's for music, Is they want every piece of software under the sun installed and then wonder why cubase isn't 100%/ + we want to connect to the network and listen to all the network broadcasts and hang when the file server is busy etc. then they get macs and make that they are great, probably because their not on the network! and they only have logic installed!

we give music there own dedicated FS - just an old town server we found which i think is xeon 2gb ram with 2 500gb hard disks in running samba - they then save to this and its just what they want they asked for so its what they got

but all our macs will be used by our radiostation for all the edititing etc they do

I don't think there is much - they save to the shared drive then copy up to the actual fs - so that there is only ever about 10/12 users connected as only the music machines get the mapped drive

i'm thinking of vlaning music as well to cut down on broadcast traffic,

 

so they save to the shared drive? is this the samba box? then copy to fs? their home area?

 

how do they get access to the shared drive and home area at the same time?

the other option I'm thinking of is dual boot? normal school image on one partition and the music image on the other, with no network enabled at all on the music image, then they can boot back into the school image to copy their work from the local hard disk to server?

we have it so that they login normally to the network - only on them selected machines they get the Music drives as well as their normal network drives - they then save there working directory to the music drive and at the end of the lesson put a copy in there my documents - they then leave there copy on the music server (making the copy in case of other students deleting) - they do have a second partition on the windows machine that they can save to purely because they have a rubbish piece of software which can only write to a local drive.
