JF1010 Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I am currently looking for a free or relatively cheap piece of software that can scan our network intermittently and report back if a wireless access point is down/not responding. Ideally we don't want to buy a central managed solution if we don't have to (even though we are aware of the benefits). We currently have the following access points being self managed as standalone AP's; HP J8131B Wireless Access Point 420 HP MSM310 Access Point Currently our "system" is checked manually by the wonders of Firefox and bookmarking all our access points and "open in all tabs". It does the job but, obviously it would be more ideal for a bit of software to ping it every hour and email/pop-up if there is no response. I do not require reports on SSID's, radio channels, users on AP etc, just the mere active / failed will do me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Domino Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Check out Nagios for ping response monitoring - I believe there's even some details in the wiki.
sdc Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 We use The Dude - it's free and sounds like it would do what you want (and more besides if you fancy playing around with it). More info on our setup here.
plexer Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 You could use opsmartping which should be available from Ozan on here. It won't do email if it fails though but it's just a small app that runs as a service with a front end for setup and it displays if something has failed a ping. Ben
JF1010 Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 Thanks all, I will attempt to go with THE DUDE option. Thanks again.
JF1010 Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 I need to get post count up to PM... sorry for freepost
