For various reasons, I want to run a PC with both Office 2003 and Office 2010. I'm aware of the profile corruption issues with doing this, however the two instances will be used by different people - the 2010 person won't use 2003 and vice versa. Would this be okay, or are there other considerations?

Whoa! What profile corruption issues? I have a couple of rooms (~40 PC's) with Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 on them. They don't use Outlook though.

IIRC.. you can - but NOT Outlook.. its one or the other..

I did get some issues where someone's outlook profile was created using Outlook 2010, but wouldn't open in 2007...

We have Office 2003 and 2010 on many machines in our place. The main issue we run into is when a user opens a document in 2003, everytime someone then opens 2010 it runs a configuration, every single time. It doesn't matter who is logged on, if 2003 was open before then 2010 will configure, which can take a while.

I think you cannot do that because if you installed 2003 first and then installed 2007 then your old one is replaced with new. And if you installed 2007 or 10 and then wanted to try old one then an error occurred that you have an latest version available in your PC. I think its difficult to install both.

What OS will you be using for these two people? If it's Windows 7 Pro or above, you can install Office 2010 on Windows 7. Then install Office 2003 in XP Mode, that way Office 2003 can be used side by side with Office 2010 - no conflicts on the machine and it will appear in the start menu.

However it does depend on how the system is configured/set-up. Just an idea...

We had real problems with shared modules, this caused all sorts of problems with Sharepoint.

This was escalated to Microsoft support who eventually conceded that this was not a good idea and advised we uninstalled all 2003 components.

Even after removing the Office 2003 suite the problems returned.

Then we realised that we had Visio 2003 installed!

The end result was that we had to upgrade all of the Visio users to Visio 2010 or have issues with Sharepoint!

So, if anybody tells you they are compatible it's not true...

The official line is these installations can "co-exist" but the truth is "just about" until something breaks then it's update everything...

This is a bit of a pain, I had to keep office 2007 on our administration staff computers due to SIMS, yet I wanted them to at least have outlook 2010 for which you also need word 2010 installed along side to allow things like autocorrection.

Dispite me setting word 2007 as the default, apparently whenever an update for word 2010 is installed, 2010 will set itself back as the default, which naturally breaks SIMS. This is "by design" according to microsofts knowledgebase article that discribes how to run multiple versions of office side by side

Information about how to use Office 2010 suites and programs on a computer that is running another version of Office

Note If you install a software update for a version of Office, the software update repairs that version of Office. You may have to repair some or all Office products after you install a software update to restore the file associations.

So don't be suprised if this happens for you if you do run two versions.
