A computer for home, recommendations?

Sorry if this comes up alot.

 

I have about 500- 600 quid to spend on a good general purpose family machine. What shall I go for. Should I be looking for a vista machine or is it too soon?

 

What figures should I be looking at? I'm guess at kleast a gig of ram, that's about the extent of my knowledge. Also, it seems as if D processors are rated more highly than these dual core ones, well by price anyway, why?

Probably the big question is whether or not this family PC will be called on to play high demand games or not? That will determine whether you want to get something with SLI graphics capability.

Depends if you mean the amd dual core?

Intel core 2 duo are very good for gaming.

 

And as contink said, what are it's uses? office and browsing? gaming?

 

Avoid vista for the timebeing, just ask for the free upgrade cd for later

only very basic games really. Do want it to be able to handle movie making though, burning to dvd without hic ups, and for it to be useful for the next 5 years.

No, off the shelf.

 

Computer active recommend a Dell and an Evesham.

a mac book for about 700 , can put 5 to 6 hundred down on it up front and pay the other 1 or 2 hundred off over a year or two or w/e

 

Unless you are thinking about a desktop or something along those lines then an imac which would be about the same depending on which one you chose obviously

I agree, get a Mac, you could get the Mac Mini for about £400.

 

PC's are great for a work environment but at home where you cant really lock them down Mac's are great.
