Hyper V 2008 R2 licensing

Hello,

We are on the Microsoft Campus 3 agreement Enterprise keys with software assurance. On our licensed downloads there are only server without hyperV available for download. Does anyone know if campus 3 covers hyperv? and if not how much it is extra?

tbh on our agreement I can d/l anything licensed or not, hyper-v enabled windows 2008 r2 is just called windows 2008 r2

Hyper-V is an integral part of Windows itself due to the fact that the hypervisor runs at a level below the OS so it will be covered by proxy. The license for 2008 R2 states the following...

 

There are two types of OSEs, physical and virtual. A physical OSE is configured to run directly on a physical hardware system. The operating system instance used to run hardware virtualization software (e.g. Microsoft Hyper-V Server or similar technologies) or to provide hardware virtualization services (e.g. Microsoft virtualization technology or similar technologies) is considered part of the physical OSE. A virtual OSE is configured to run on a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system. A physical hardware system can have either or both of the following:

• one physical OSE
  
• one or more virtual OSE
  

 

The only other thing to keep in mind is that according to the Microsoft website, the Campus Agreement covers the Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server which means the maximum number of VMs you can run on a particular host is four. If you need more than four, you will need to purchase the Data Center edition. This is licensed per physical processor, so if you have two servers which both have dual quad core processors you will need four licenses in total.

Thanks guys you are right doh! At the top of the servers downloads is Server 2008R2 without mention of hyper v

 

In our "licensed downloads" we also have the datacenter edition. I take it as you say our agreement doesnt cover that?

 

4 would be plenty just want to maximise the work of a new server we are getting. We will go vmware once we get the funding this is just a stop gap
