Slow disk backups

I've recently been having another go at supplementing our LTO tape backups with disk backups. I previously tried backing up to a networked drive, but gave up because it was too slow.

 

This time I picked up a 3TB Lacie "Hi-speed USB 2" drive which plugged straight in, and told Backup Exec to archive some large folders. But although the data transfer rate started at about 800MB/min, it gradually tailed off to around 250MB over the next 24hrs, and I've just cancelled it. This compares to about 1300MB/min average for tape.

 

What am I doing wrong? Did I get the wrong kind of drive? Or are disk backups just far slower...?

I Had a similar problem, try the following

 

1. Write a new Backup schedule, check what your backing up. and test again

2. Backup the Backup, Format the external Hard drive and start backup - this worked for me for a while. (a week at the most) then test backup.

3. Get a new NAS / USB backup <---That one worked for me

Btw my backups normally was 8 hours then shot up to 36 hours!

I would have gone for an eSATA or USB 3.0 HDD (with appropriate PCIe card). The fastest USB 2.0 can go is around 25-30MB/s max (which is really slow compared to the speeds the latest HDDs are capable of).

By large, do you mean folders which contains lots of files (thousands/millions?) or just a few really big files?
