network running slow one part of network

Hi we are experiencing part of the network which is slow. I am going to test cat5. I am also running colasoft network monitoring but cant find anything. We are loosing about 18 pings a day to our servers. Any suggestions?

You will want to look at the usage on the link at this time and look in the switches for any errors that may be occurring.

 

As you've identified it is only slow in one area it sounds as though you have an over committed link, do you know what speed it is and whether you can increase the available bandwidth by teaming/faster interfaces?

we have a lag setup fiber from the switch netgear. so this should be 2gb, if configured correctly?

im sure the link is setup correctly. So to isolate the problem what software would you recommend to look at the usage of the links?

should I enable stp on both switches?

18 pings a day on a high traffic link os not to bad. If it is fiber have you tried cleaning the connectors as any dust in these will cause issues. STP will not help at all.

 

I would look at monitering the switches with some form of SNMP moniter to see if their CPUs are overtaxed and hence causing dropouts. I is more likely to be the cable inbetween though, assuing it is fiber a clean should do, the fibre modules can burn out over time so one could be at the very start of failing. The fiber could also be very slightly damaged or installed slightly incorectly causing issues.

 

If this is not the fault/setup please restate what the issues is and what you have tried to resolve it.
