Sims needs my documents access?

I've disabled my documents on Windows 7 and now Sims won't load.

 

How do I get sims to load without my documents access (we have the my documents mapped to the U: drive)?

SIMS Creates a folder in My Documents called "My SIMS Documents"

 

Not sure how you could get around that.

 

May I ask why you are intent on disabling My Documents in the first place???

There is a setting in the SIMS.ini file, located C:\Windows\System32 (I think, or might just be C:\Windows). Change this to whatever needed. Note that this will need to be done on each computer. You might want a script to delpoy this. (XCOPY)

when you say the my document are mapped to the U: drive, if that's a proper mapping of the system 'my documents' then there shouldn't be a problem. on XP we had my documents mapped to the F: drive and the My SIMs Documents folder would be created there.

 

since win7 there have been issues. all F: drives are still there, and i think my docs is still mapped there because all files save there, but something weird is happening, and My SIMs Documents is being created in the local Documents folder. Two things. It could be that our My Docs are no longer mapped to the network drive, but as the drive exists still with all files it just looks that way. The other thing is that having that folder created locally, causes some permissions issues. We're having profiles problems as it is.

 

not sure what bother you're trying to save zag, it needs those folders to store temp report files, report templates, downloaded files from doc store etc. Is it the Documents library or whatever it is that you've disabled?

Its more the fact that I disabled libraries in Windows 7 and this seamed to disable my documents as well, but I still had the mapped Homedrive available so it wasn't a problem.

 

Well that is until I tried Sims!

Like i said the my sims doc was going into document library for us, so perhaps you need to look at the system variables and redirect one of those. That could be done on an image, or by script.

I started looking at it, especially the %appdata as that's causing us problems, but then got busy with other things, plus it's not really my game any more.

I managed to fix this today. Could be somehting unique to us though.

We were getting "Access to My SIMS Documents" denied.

 

Tried many things but finally found the problem, in the registry.

 

The "Personal" user shell folder was pointed at a network share (something to do with a mapped drive, I suspect)

 

So I went to Computer\HKEY_USERS\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders and changed the "Personal" value to the proper "c:\users\\documents" folder.

 

Like I said, could be unique to us, but might help you.
