I want to teach inspiring ICT

where do I start??

 

I am in my final year of a BEd course and my specialism is ICT. I really want to blow everyone away with engaging, practical lessons, but when it comes to ICT, I havent really taught much (I am also a FS/KS1 focused student...I havent taught anything above year 1 yet!).

 

My class is a year 3 and we are looking at using Textease studio 6 to create graphic models......

 

So far I have thought of getting the class to make sandwiches and then making reperesentations on the screen as the software has great resources for sandwiches for some odd reason!

 

Any other suggestions please?

Green screening is always fun, get them to record some video on a green screen then use software to superimpose them on some exciting video or something.

 

Stop motion is also a good easy one (but time consuming) as you can get them to make little playdoh models and storyboards etc to make little animation videos.

If you want less potential for mess, you could try Lego minifigs (which seem to be sold in impulse-buy packets at some convieence store checkouts now) or images printed on magnetically-backed paper (available from eBay) which can then be used on mini whiteboards to create your animation.

If you are going with stop motion, get the kids to be the models. I'll try and dig out the vids but there was a crazy for stop motion music videos not too long ago and they were impressive.

If you are going to do the graphical modelling (I teach just ICT to y2,3,4,5 and 6 over two schools as well as being Mr Tech Guy) then why not try modelling something realistic with the kids. You could use Word and the shape objects and teach them how to group items to make chairs and tables in plan view then set them the task of redesigning the classroom (with a plan you have made), what do they need to consider, access etc number of pupils etc, then save the final design...but then say another few pupils are to join the class, how could they redesign the original plan to accomodate the new pupils. Sets them up to use graphical modelling on a realistic situation, one they are familiar with, leading to 'what if' questions and learing practical skills in the use of making plan schematics and using work drawing tools in a creative way. Leads on to plan making, can we better layout the teachers car park for better parking etc. There are lots of things you could do with it. Get them to make a map of the school by walking around taking photos so they know whats where etc, insert them onto the final plan. Remember for us making a plan is relatively simple but for them they see it all from a different angle i.e.low down so plan view is not as obvious. Lots of links with maths, ICT, geography, remember its all supposed to link together and ICT be the tool not the focus (I know, I know it does not always work that way and you sometimes just have to teach the skills in order to use it as a tool!) Hope thats of some help.
