Sharing a folder...

Ok..

 

In server 2003 setting up a share was easy. I am trying to setup a share that is read only at the top level (3 folders and people are not able to create more) Then apply folder permissions so that everyone can read but only certain groups can create folders in the original 3 folders. Does that make sense?

 

Can anyone give me an idiots guide. As I can get the share working but am only able to get read only access or full access to work.

You should have share permissions to allow full access to all groups that need access then do the restrictions with NTFS

I understand that. But the bit I can't get my head around is the groups bit at the star ie reader, co-owner and owner? I assume reader is read only and co-owner and owner are full access?

Well I have the permissions setup exactly as I would want and everyone can still add a folder or anything for that matter. So 3 folders can become 5, 6 etc. I want staff to only be able to create content in those three folders no where else.

Give read only rights to the top level folder containing the three then break the inheritance on the subfolders, give each of these individual subfolders the permissions for the groups that you want to have acces ie read+write to the specific group.

Well that is what I have done, I have it exactly like this on 2k3. However if a teacher acct logs on they can add a folder in the media folder. I want them to only be able add content in to the 3 folders inside media. I have attached pics of what I have done.

 

 

Anyone see where I am going wrong?

You still have creator/owner and user privilages on the top level folder, you should only have the ones that you need explicitly. This may be the cause. On the advanced security edit window there is an Effective Permissions tab which may help you track it down.

Yup I managed to figure this one out myself last night when I could not sleep!! Was one of those dozy moments . But many thanks for the help!!
