Whats the cheapest way of doing this

 

 

I have been quoted from our support company (a2z)

BI have done some research on this, if you read the bit below (important part is in the blue!) I did has him for a quote on rds cals, gussing he throught this was cheaper

 

External Connector Licensing Overview

 

 

The Windows Server 2008 External Connector (EC) license is an optional licensing alternative to address a specific customer scenario. If you would like to allow your business partners or customers to access your network, you have two licensing options:

• Acquire Windows CALs for each of your external users.
  
• Acquire External Connector (EC) licenses for each server licensed to run one or more instances of the Windows Server 2008 R2 software that will be accessed by your external users.
  

An external user is a person who is not an employee, or similar personnel of the company or its affiliates, and is not someone to whom you provide hosted services using the server software. An EC license can be acquired for servers running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, and Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based and Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems editions. It is not applicable to Windows Web Server 2008, Windows Web Server 2008 R2, or Windows Small Business Server.

In addition to using the EC license with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, you may opt to use it with an earlier version of the server software, provided the version is no earlier than Windows 2000. Due to technical incompatibility, the Terminal Server and Remote Desktop Services External Connector licenses cannot be used with earlier versions of the server software

 

 

 

So it may work for students has there not employees correct?

Could we get away with a few staff using this?

Of buy a few rds cals for the staff

 

 

Or buy has many remote desktop cals has needed (device licenced)

 

We do have two servers with two processors in it each (Xeon 5110 @ 1.60) with 4GB RAM

 

Not sure how many people can login there at one, only really worth getting the amount of cal needed for the total amount we can get onto the two servers

 

 

So thats 4x tha amount showing above for the total price

 

 

Just found this! even 25 per a server, thats pretty damn cheaper than quoted above

 

Would you say thats look the correct thing?

I'd license it on concurrent users TBH the MS RD/TS license server will then only allow that number of concurrent connection to the remotedesktop/terminal servers. We currently have 50 licenses, an external connector license would probably be better suited if everyone in the school is accessing the servers from they own devices.

Ok sorted I think, external connector via licening on a schools agreement £400 each server, that's a lot saved, dontvknow why they didn't quote using that to start with

An External Connector does cover Students (taken from Microsoft Site). External Connector licences are per server so if multiple servers, you need multiple licences. Also Microsoft do not do Concurrent licences, they are either Device or user on CALS and Device for applications

 

Q. If a student accesses a school's network, is the student considered an External User?

 

A. Yes, and thus the student can be covered under an External Connector license.

 

Although on a Microsoft School agreeement there is also a student option that depending on the Schools size would work out alot more cost effective.
