RIS not working?

I have just installed RIS and ran the setup tool to get the default XP files in place. I have also ticked the box in 'Remote Install' for that server in the AD.

 

Now, when I go to a client and ask it to start up via PXE it gets a DHCP address but says it can't find a menu/prompt.

 

Looking in the DHCP settings, it doesn't appear to have changed since before RIS (no new server options etc...).

 

What am I missing?

No, but it is running VMWare server.

In that case it will probably be getting confused in the same way dual homed does. You have two IP addresses and RIS doesn't like that.

I've tried removing it with no joy. Does it need a static IP?

Have you authorised your RIS server?

 

1. Open your DHCP console

2. Right click DHCP in the upper left portion of the console window, choose "Manage Authorised Servers". If your server isn't listed select "Authorise".

 

It's straightforward from there. If you miss this step you probably won't get your clients to connect to the service properly.

 

RIS *can* work on multihomed servers but you need to make sure that the following are true:

 

(a) DHCP is installed on the RIS server

(b) Scopes are defined on the DHCP server

The server is authorised in the list but it still doesn't work.

 

I am getting the message 'Bad or missing PXE menu/prompt'

Figured it out. Another forum had a similar problem with PXE and DHCP. The problem is when there is an 'option 43' configured in the Scope Options on the DHCP server. Removing this fixed the issue and I now have a working RIS server.
