Stuarte Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi All, I have an issue wherby a GPO(not default domain policy) which has become corrupt. It applies our software restriction policies. Although It still seems to be being applied successfully, it is not editable and shows the following error message: The following errors were encountered: The file "\\server\sysvol\EBS.INTERNAL\Policies\{4AB63E27-A88A-4C6A-93FD-337CC2C0D321}\Machine\registry.pol" is not in a valid format. The file might be corrupt. Use Group Policy Object Editor to reconfigure the settings in this extension. It contains a lot of bespoke settings and, yes, I haven't backed it up using GPMC. Anyone have any ideas re recovery? anyone know if I can retrieve it from a system state backup without doing a full system state restore?? any help gratefully received. Cheers, Stu
DMcCoy Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 You could copy the system state file to a temporary standalone server which is most definitely NOT connected to the network and then restore it, then copy the file with usb stick. It *may* work but at least you can do the restore without breaking the network (especially if you have more than one DC). 1
buzzard Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 try finding the GUID of the gpo, then nav to the folder on your backup and just restore that folder with the GUID name... Thats if I understand it correctly!! 1
ricki Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 HI I know this means taking the server down but have you tried a chk disk. Richard 1
Stuarte Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 Thanks guys. All good suggestions.. I'm not sure you can drill down through Sysvol to the GUID without restoring system state as a whole (at least not with backup exec) but I'll certainly give it a look tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
sted Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 i have on occasion found you can use gpmc to show the settings then just copy them all to a new gpo bit of a pain but it has worked for me in the past
