In AD for every user the Homedrive is set, but sometimes when Student log on there H drive links to the ROOT of the folder so they have accsess to all year groups work?

Any idea whats causing this.

Nope but just change the permissions so they cant read the root and that will usually make them to log off and back on again. Edited September 20, 2010 by zag

Does this occur consistently on a PC or does it 'fix' itself with a log off / back on.

 

Could be a GPO set on some but not other's that connect to the root of the folder.

Its Wayne...lol..., Yeah when they Log off and on it fix's itself on the same machine.

I am guessing here but do you have more than one dns and domain controllers. I have has this when I have had the following things

 

A switch misbehaving. Some times rebooting them cures the problem.

A nic card misbehaving and flooring the network with traffic.

Old network printers that do not like the switch they are plugged into.

Replication not working correctly and different domain controllers having different problems.

DNS problems and client not finding servers promptly

Programs on the clients not working promptly or looking for servers that have been removed.

Clients with network printers that have been removed.

Scripts on the client or group policy that do not execute properly due to wrong path or point to a server that has been removed.

We have also had this on specific clients that had to have the nic card drivers updated to stop the problem.

Also see if you have a loop on the network and switches are madly flashing

Try and netdiag and a dcdiag this some times helps give you a clue.

A broken DFS can also cause this problem if paths are sent through dfs

 

Here this happens when the network is under a lot of pressure.

We have 2 DC's with DNS on both.

I'm going to ask the usual question that tends to fix oddities like this

 

Do you have "Always wait for network at computer startup and logon" enabled?

It is usually a setting in active directory (GPO) that fixes this. And dont map to the root as well, I think there is a setting in there for that.

Right I have enabled "Always wait for network at computer startup and logon" so will see how we get on with that.
