Remote Assisance troubles

Hi all,

 

We're rolling out Windows 7 to the PC's on site, and I've just used Remote Assistance to help out another member of staff for the first time (until now its been using RA on a XP machine).

 

The problem I found is that when I needed to run a program or task "As an Administrator", the Remote Assistance window (from my end) would go blank, but the other user would see the usuall login box for an admin to enter the account details.

 

Has anyone else had this? Or is there a work around?

Which end has the Windows 7 machine? Yours? Theirs? Both?

RA uses different protocols between the version shipped in XP and Vista/7 if it is somehow working from an XP machine to a 7 one then this could be a reason.

Ah, sorry, forgot that bit ... oops.

 

RA worked a treat (most of the time) when my machine was Win7 and theirs was XP. Now they're both Win7, and getting this problem.

Apparently this policy will work by disabling the secure desktop overlay when prompting:

Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > User Account Control : Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation. Check Define this policy setting and select Disabled.

Remote Assistance & UAC

 

Shouldn't add too much of a security risk as it still fires up UAC, just stops the screen locking of the non UAC items and the screen blackout effect.

Just providing an alternative solution here, but when we ran into this problem, I used the following GPO setting:

 

Computer Configuration-->Policies-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings-->Local Policies/Security Options-->User Account Control: Allow UIAccess applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure deskop (set to enabled).

 

It's been working fine for us ever since.
