Slightly confused how I'm getting on the Internet

So this morning I swapped over my connections to my new ISP.

Changed over my firewall and made very change I needed and I'm certainly using my new interent as it's faster. Incoming connections look OK so I'm reasonably happy.

 

Where I'm confused is that appart from in my firewall I've not specified any new DNS servers. My Smoothwall proxy looks at my local DNS (not sure if that's OK but it seems OK) but the internet works.

 

Now I had a feeling that in my old 2K3 servers I'd specified my ISP's DNS servers in DNS so if a request could not be resolved locally, i.e. you put a websire it, it forwarded the DNS request onto my ISP and I was under the impression that this needed to be done. The problenm is that I can't find any record of where I've got my old ISP DNS setting in my migrated 2K8R2 servers which confuses me as I'm not sure how anything is being resolved?

It will be the DNS forwarders tab (right click the DNS server in DNS Manager).

Yes... now that was what I though but there's nothing there. So does this mean that the entries got removed when I migrated to new servers? If so how am I getting on the internet? SHOULD my ISP's DNS servers be listed in there?

You are most likely using ROOT hints on your dns.

As said above, your server will use the root hints on your server if it can not resolve the address locally. You could specify a forwarder to your isp dns to let this do the grunt work for you instead but you don't have to.
