Is there a Capita Guide on how to install SQL 2008 Server?

 

I've got the guide that leads you through the SQL 2008 Express install and to be honest I can make a reasonable educated guess however...

 

Given it's SIMS and I want to make sure I don't miss something I was wondering if there was a guide on how to install SQL server so SIMS is happy.

Forget that, install the express, put the kettle on, then bung the server 2008 standard disc in, maintenance tasks, upgrade edition. Normally the kettles just finished boiled by the time it's done.

Yeah got that. It steps you though the SQL Express install and it's about 95% the sames as SQL Server but as there are a few more options of what to install I wondered if there was a SQL server specific version. Just being a little overly paranoid to be honest but better safe than sorry. If I have to wing it I have to wing it.

i'm probably too late now stuart, but the answers to some of the questions you might have (which options need ticking on install) are below, taken from a document on SupportNet created by a user who raised a case with Capita asking the same thing. So it's not definitive but might be useful:

 

Click on Installation in the left hand menu and then select the first option New SQL Server stand-alone installation. The SQL Server 2008 setup process will start.

 

Now follow the instructions on page 12 of Capita’s Migrating SIMS to SQL2008 documentation, part 11. up to part 17 Feature Selection page. This is where SQL2008 Express differs from SQL Server.

 

The Capita help-desk recommendation is to tick the following:

- Database Engine Services.

- SQL Server Replication.

- Full-Text Search.

- Analysis Services

- Client Tools Connectivity.

- Integration Services.

- Client Tools Backwards Compatibility.

- Client Tools SDK.

- Management Tools - Basic

- Management Tools - Complete

 

It's optional if you wish to install the Reporting Services.

 

On the Instance Configuration page, change the Named instance to SIMS2008. Your existing SIMS SQL instance is probably called SIMS2005 (see the installed instances panel). Click Next.

 

The Server Configuration window will be displayed. It should look similar to the following. If so click Next.

 

On the Analysis Services Configuration window, ass you users for which you want to give access. Click Next.

 

Now follow the Capita documentation from section 22 on page 17, “Database Engine Configuration”.

 

Once the installation has complete, the Installation Process screen should look similar to

 

Click Next, SQL Server 2008 has now been installed.

 

At this stage yo can run the SIMS SQL Migration Utility.

 

I'd credit the author but the original link wouldn't work for me and i just copied the text out of the document and made my own. It should be on the Technical forum on SupportNet though.

Yep it's a bit late but cheers anyway vik.

I've installed this as I could figure out based on the SQL Express install and it all seems to be working OK. Bonuses include it fixing the fact that the exam result import was very slow unless run on the server!
