All of a sudden all sound has stopped working

When i try to start the Windows Audio service it fails due to dependant service Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

I try to start this and get an error 0x80070002 stating that a specified file cannot be found..

This was with a Creative SB Live! 5.1 and also with an onboard Via AC97 chip.

Can find no solutions online - nor as to what the "specified file" is.. un-installing the drivers make no difference whatsoever.

Odd that they were working at first and now are not..

anyone seen this before?
