I'm in the middle of upgrading our Win2003 DC to Server 2008 x64. This is what I have done so far.. If somone could just ensure i'm on the right track... i'd appreciate it..

 

- Installed Server 2008 Standard x64 & Installed Updates

- Renamed Server to CURRIC2 and assigned static IP

- Pointed DNS to Current 2003 DC

- Joined to Domain

- Upgraded Schema on 2003 DC

ADPREP /Forestprep on the w2k/w2k3 schema master

ADPREP /rodcprep on the w2k3 domain master

ADPREP /domainprep on the w2k3 infrastructure master

ADPREP /domainprep /gpprep

- Ran DCPROMO on Server 2008

- Transferred 5 FMSO Roles over

- Installed DHCP Role (not configured yet)

- Installed File Server Role

 

This is what I plan to do next:

- Migrate DHCP from 2003 DC

- Backup Papercut Database

- Use RichCopy to copy data over (100GB)

- Run DCPROMO on 2003 DC and demote it

- Change IP and Computer name on demoted DC (CURRIC1OLD)

- Remove any records of demoted DC in DNS

- Change IP and Computer name of new Server 2008 to that of demoted DC (CURRIC1)

- Change DNS entry to point to self

- Re-install Papercut

- Pray!

 

Does this look ok? have I missed a fundamental step!!!?

Ohno!!!! your right.. i'v just looked at my cd's.. and I have used the wrong one!

 

i'm assuming I can insert the correct disk and upgrade? question is.. will this cause network disruption?..and should i continue with my migration.. and upgrade at the end?

End the migration and start from scratch. Better to do it properly than bodge it!!

Transfer 5 FMSO Roles back to 2003 DC

Run DCPROMO on 2008 DC and demote it..

Format and start again

 

Will i need to re-run adprep from the R2 disc?

yes will need to run a further forestprep to take your Schema to R2

 

Is there any reason you want to use the same name for the 2008 server in the end? I personally would avoid this to prevent issues down the line....I'd be interested to know if you can simply rename your box that is holding all 5 FSMO roles

I'd rather not risk renaming existing DC until it has been decommed.. theres been a couple of posts on here.. i'v sone googling about it.. and it looks like you can rename a server 2008 DC ..

sorry I think my "in the end" remark was misleading....I meant why did you want to use the same name at all? I believe you're quite correct in being able to rename a 2008 DC....I just wonder what renaming the server holding also the FSMO roles will do
