It was rather long, wasn't it. Didn't notice till I posted, and at the same time, my timer was ringing in the kitchen to tell me my pasta bake was ready, so I skipped altering it; well, my pasta bake would have been ready if I had turned the timer and the oven on...

This is from an internal training resource i'm sorting out for next year. In addition i've downloaded all the spreadsheets that list the different menu paths for new stuff and got them on the intranet.

 

For the new Win7 image i am specifying that it's installed with Silverlight and those guides linked in first post to be installed locally.

Executive summary needed: is there no way to set Excel and Word into some kind of legacy mode where the functions are back on the old menus and not splattere randomly accross the top of the screen wasting an inch of valuable document space?

Not sure but if there was, it would delay your transition to the new more intuitive way of working. To save that valuable inch, just double click a tab, to minimize the ribbon.

@General: No, you cannot. There was a rumor that MS offered a paid for patch to turn the ribbon back into file menu (this was ture also for 2007). How much truth there was in that I am not sure.

 

We regularly offer our trainees PDFed screen captures of all the ribbons for easy of access guides, goes down very well!

For Office 2003 to 2007 (which is very similar to 2010) there is an excellent interactive command reference guide produced by Microsoft where you select in 2003 what menu you are using and you are then shown an animation of how to do it in 2007. Must have taken ages to make! I don't think such an easy to use tool exists for 2010 so i'm posting it here.

The tool does exist it's the second link in post #4 above, for the whole office suite. Further down are specific links to the individual programs. From the program pages, you can near the bottom, download an offline copy which is a lookup workbook, so you don't need to be online with the fancy silverlight demo to work out how things have changed.

Actually, also linked in the first post too, and also available to be installed on a machine so don't need to be online as i previously implied.
