Duff USB Drive

A teacher has just presented me with a usb stick that is showing as unformatted. It has her life on it and is not backed up. I've run an demo version of Data Doctor Recovery and that finds the files but costs $45 for the full version to recover them. Before I fork out the dosh, can anyone suggest any free recovery software I can try please?
