Student passwords

We have several differnet systems that the students have different passwords for (network, webmail, VLE). When students return after summer holidays we are finding that a lot of passwords are forgotten. Does anybody blanket reset student passwords when they return? If so how do you then notify students of the changed passwords?

We tried this once and blanket reset all student passwords, think we had a different password for each year group and set it so they had to change the password at first logon.

 

Students were informed of the passwords from their tutors as staff we emailed the details of the new passwords.

 

The main problem with doing this was that some idiots decided to login as other students and delete the entire content of the Home Directory which meant we were then flooded with request to restore data!

Can you not change your systems to use Active Directory for all, so its the same password for the webmail, vle and network?

we dont blanket re-set the passwords, we had problems this year when we set a desently stong passowrd for the new year 7 students, all of our setup is all liked to AD/LDAP, makes life a lot easyer for us
