Audacity - cannot select input

Anyone else have this issue?

 

The input selction dropdown box is greyed out and also there is no selection available from the preferences menu.

 

ISTR that there is an issue with many sound cards being crippled to deny recording to other devices but I haven't looked into this before. Anyone have any ideas how to get around it? I assume it must be a registry setting?

We get this on some soundcard drivers. You need to change the recording properties in either the soundcard software, or windows sound properties. Audacity can't seem to do it.

There's no option to change it from the CP.

I had the same problem when I tried audacity at home. but I didn't know how to fix it.

Have you made sure you're using motherboard manufacturer's drivers for the sound card and not some windows generic ones. Are there any disabled devices listed in device manager.

I've set "display disabled devices" and "display disconnected devices" and there's nothing showing. The only options are Microphone and Line In.

 

Manufacturer specific drivers are being used and are up to date.

I think it's resolved.

 

I uninstalled the soundcard in CP and rebooted. It wanted a reinstall obviously so I instructed it to search for the best driver. It found an updated driver, installed it and lo and behold I have sound mixer back in Device manager.

 

Result!
