password protect PXE boot?

Is there any way to password protect PXE boot?

 

obviously kids could get to it easily if the machine there using is rebooted, i know we could just turn off lan boot but for simplicity i'd prefer to keep it enabled...naturally if theres no way we can password protect it i'll just turn them off though

What make of machines are you using ? We have around 500 Dell's here and we can password protect the boot, also you can do in the boot options for PXE if you are using a WDS boot.

You cant password PXE client side other than the normal password BIOS/boot menu, the authentication comes server side, which if its setup correctly will stop them.

try this i use saves time and problems.

you just need to add

 

to PXELINUX config file or in FOG 0.28 tick the hide boot menu

 

PROMPT 0
TIMEOUT 100
NOESCAPE 1
MENU SHIFTKEY 1

 

By doing this I didn't have to re-train technicians. The computer will, by default, boot from the hard drive and show the PXE menu if you hold down on Ctrl-Alt

You can also configure syslinux/pxelinux to require a password for a menu option and set it to default boot to hard drive after a timeout.

 

Password can be different for each menu entry, this can also be used to boot wds.

Or just alter the boot order.

This is what we do. Internal HDD is first, with NIC second. Everything else is disabled and the PXE menu is password protected using the method Plexer mentioned.
