Sims SQL 2008 install

I am struggling a little bit with SQL 2008 install on a new server, wonder if anyone can prod me int he right direction.

 

I have a new server, I have updated SQL to 2008 on the old server so its running the desktop engine for today so I really would like to get it moved across tonight.

 

The Sims stuff I found wasn't very thorough. I installed as below but the instance name wasn't allowing me to select it so I tried to install a new instance with the SIMS2008 name but it failed.

 

I am currently uninstalling SQL2008 and trying again. I know I have to change the pipes too... shoudl I be changing the default instance name to start with to SIMS2008? Then I presume I can just copy the sims folder over, detach the DB and reattach it to the new server?

 

Was tempted to install the Desktop engine on the new server then just upgrade it.

 

Insert the disk.

Select Installation from the left hand side.

Click on 'New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation'

Click Ok after the Support Rules has completed.

Click Install.

Click Next.

Enter your Product Key.

Click Next.

Tick the 'I accept the license terms' and click Next

Select the relevant features you want to install. You must select at least Database Engine Services.

Click Next.

You can either use the Default Instance Name or specify your own instance name by selecting the Named Instance radio button.

You can also change the Instance ID as well. This will change the name of the SQL Server Directory. For example if it was named MSSQLSERVER the SQL Server Directory would be

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER.

You can also choose the route to where you want SQL 2008 to be installed to.

Click Next once this has been completed.

Click Next

On the Service Accounts Tab please click on the dropdown and select NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for SQL Server Agent and NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the SQL Server Database Engine.

Click Next

On the Account Provisioning tab choose Mixed Mode and enter in your SA Password for this SQL Instance.

You will then need to click on the Add button to add an Administrator Account as a SQL Server Administrator.

Click Next

Click Next

Click Next

Click Install

After the installation has completed please run Windows Updates and apply all SQL Server Updates if available.

Never mind found it, reinstalled it with a instan name of SIMS2008 and enabled the pipes... knew it was something simple.

 

Was up till nearly 2 last night getting stuff sorted for it

 

Will fizz it over tonight and do some testing.

well this is 3 hours of my life i can't get back.

 

Can't dettach the old sql as I am getting a FMS error saying that there are users still using it.. i don't use FMS... oh and I can't install the management studio cos I don't have enough space.

I wouldn't put your SQL database on your C Drive from the steps above it looks like you have done. I have recently been on a 7 day SQL course. Microsoft Don't really recomend it, although they locate it on the C drive by default.

Sorted it, after many head scratching I found a laptop had been left on... sent a very nice email to the person asking them why they left it logged into Sims when i asked them not to.

 

All done now. Phew.

You could have stoped the SQL service. Renamed to connect.ini then started it again then it would have dropped the connection.

I didn't know that was the reason, the error message mentioned an FMS installation which threw me.

Another pointer if you need everyone out of sims view what files are open in computer management that will show you if anyone is on.

it didn't show it up, its the first thing I looked at.

There were no files open, the only way I found the client was by looking in the activity monitor in SQL Management and the connection was there.
